Safe & Sound Protocol
How Safe & Sound Protocol Works
Many people's nervous systems are set to high alert. This may cause stress or anxiety, sensory or sleep problems. Sometimes people with sensory issues cannot face going into busy environments and may have digestive problems.
The Safe & Sound Protocol was developed by Dr Stephen Porges. The treatment requires five hours of listening to sounds that calm the body and the mind. It soothes the nervous system by working on a part of the brain called the vagas nerve.

Most people will listen for 30 minutes each day, for 10 days, rather than the full five hours at once. Each treatment varies, however, as some people may only be able to manage five minutes a day, and that's okay. Your therapist will work out what is right for you.

After treatment, people say they feel calmer, find it easier to sleep and that they can connect with more people. If a person has sensory issues this treatment can reduce these, allowing them to be in a busy environment without getting overwhelmed. It can also ease digestion.
